How Should a Christian Husband Love His Wife?
A Christian husband should love his wife as Christ loved the church: sacrificially, faithfully, truthfully, protectively, tenderly, and consistently. His love should be visible in listening, service, provision, sexual faithfulness, patient leadership, honor, repentance, and concern for her spiritual and practical good.
What Is the Husband’s Standard?
Ephesians 5:25 commands, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” The standard is not cultural masculinity, personal preference, or what other husbands do. It is the self-giving love of Christ.
This love bears cost. A husband should surrender selfish convenience, pride, secrecy, and harshness for the true good of his wife and household.
What Does It Mean to Nourish and Cherish?
Ephesians 5:28–29 says a husband ought to love his wife as his own body and that a man “nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church.” To nourish is to provide what strengthens; to cherish is to treat with tender care.
Love therefore notices needs. It helps carry burdens, provides responsibly, protects rest, supports health, offers affection, and refuses to treat the wife’s concerns as interruptions.
How Should a Husband Speak?
Colossians 3:19 says, “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.” Bitterness often appears through sarcasm, contempt, cold withdrawal, shouting, repeated criticism, or rehearsing old failures as weapons.
Ephesians 4:29 commands speech that builds up and ministers grace. Honest correction may be necessary, but cruelty is never made righteous by calling it truth.
How Should He Listen and Understand?
First Peter 3:7 tells husbands to dwell with their wives “according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife.” A husband cannot obey this while refusing to learn his wife’s fears, hopes, burdens, strengths, and perspective.
James 1:19 says, “let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” Listening does not require automatic agreement; it requires enough humility to understand before answering.
What Does Faithful Love Require?
Faithfulness includes the body, heart, eyes, messages, and private life. Proverbs 5:18 says, “rejoice with the wife of thy youth.” A husband should reject adultery, pornography, secret romantic attachments, manipulative flirtation, and comparisons that dishonor his wife.
Trust is strengthened by honest boundaries, transparent conduct, kept promises, and quick confession when wrongdoing occurs.
How Should He Lead?
Christlike leadership takes responsibility without demanding personal privilege. A husband should pursue Scripture, prayer, sound church fellowship, wise stewardship, family protection, and decisions shaped by God’s Word.
He should welcome his wife’s counsel. Proverbs 12:15 says, “he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.” Refusing every concern is not strong leadership; it is often pride.
How Should He Serve?
Jesus said, “I am among you as he that serveth” (Luke 22:27). A husband follows Christ when he handles ordinary responsibilities, cares during sickness, helps with children, notices unfinished work, and serves without demanding praise.
Tasks may be divided according to ability and season, but sacrificial love does not hide behind rigid expectations to avoid necessary work.
What About Romance and Intimacy?
A husband should pursue affectionate closeness, thoughtful romance, and considerate sexual intimacy. First Corinthians 7 teaches mutual responsibility, not selfish demand. Love pays attention to consent, health, fatigue, trauma, and emotional safety.
Romance should not appear only when the husband wants sex. Everyday kindness, conversation, gratitude, affection, and reliability make intimacy safer and more meaningful.
How Should He Respond When He Fails?
He should confess specifically, apologize without excuses, make restitution where possible, accept consequences, and change his conduct. Proverbs 28:13 says, “whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”
A demand for instant trust is not repentance. Trust is rebuilt through truth and consistent fruit over time.
Does Obedience Earn Salvation?
No husband loves perfectly, and marriage performance cannot earn eternal life. Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). Read How to Be Saved for the message of salvation by grace through faith.
Conclusion
A Christian husband loves his wife by following Christ’s self-giving pattern. He sacrifices, listens, provides, serves, remains faithful, speaks with grace, protects, nurtures intimacy, leads under Scripture, and repents humbly. His love should make the home safer, stronger, more truthful, and more centered upon Christ.
