How do we know God exists?

We know God exists because He has made Himself known through creation, human conscience, His acts in history, the written Word of God, and supremely through Jesus Christ. No single brief argument forces an unwilling person to believe, but the evidence is abundant and coherent.

Creation points to a Creator

The universe exists, operates according to intelligible order, and contains conditions that permit life. Things that begin to exist require an adequate cause. The universe cannot explain its own existence merely by appealing to other parts of the universe.

Romans 1:20 says God’s “eternal power and Godhead” are understood “by the things that are made.” Nature does not tell us everything about God, but it points to power, wisdom, order, and purpose.

Reason and conscience point beyond matter

Human beings reason about truth and recognize moral obligation. Conscience is not infallible, but Romans 2:15 describes “the work of the law written in their hearts.” A real moral law points toward a moral Lawgiver.

Without God, people can still behave kindly, but it is difficult to explain why cruelty is objectively wrong rather than merely disliked. The dignity of human life fits the biblical truth that people are made in God’s image.

Scripture presents revelation in history

The Bible is rooted in people, nations, places, covenants, public events, and claims about history. Its unified message unfolds across centuries and directs attention toward God’s redemption through Jesus Christ.

Biblical prophecy, the preservation of Scripture, and its coherent account of creation, sin, judgment, sacrifice, redemption, and restoration deserve careful examination. Archaeology cannot prove every miracle, and prophecy must be interpreted in context, but biblical faith is not a leap taken against evidence.

Jesus Christ is central evidence

Christianity claims that God acted openly in Jesus Christ. His teaching, miracles, crucifixion under Pontius Pilate, and bodily resurrection stand at the center of the gospel. Paul wrote that Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose the third day, and was seen by many witnesses (1 Corinthians 15:3–8).

The empty tomb, transformed disciples, early proclamation in Jerusalem, and growth of the church should be considered together. If Jesus rose, God has acted decisively in history.

Faith is not belief without evidence

Biblical faith is trust in the God who has revealed Himself. John recorded signs of Jesus so readers “might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” (John 20:31). Faith goes beyond facts, but it is not detached from them.

Merely accepting God’s existence is not saving faith (James 2:19). The evidence calls us to repent and trust Jesus Christ, who died for sinners and rose again.

The biblical answer

Creation bears God’s fingerprints, conscience bears moral witness, Scripture records His revelation, and Jesus Christ makes the invisible God known. Ask God sincerely to lead you into truth, and read the Gospel of John with a willingness to obey what you learn.
