What Is Scientology?

Scientology developed from the writings and teachings of L. Ron Hubbard.

Scientology Is Not Christian Science

The similar names frequently cause confusion.

Christian Science was founded through Mary Baker Eddy and teaches a metaphysical understanding of God, matter, sickness, and healing.

Scientology was founded through L. Ron Hubbard and teaches about the thetan, reactive mind, auditing, Clear, Operating Thetan, and spiritual advancement.

The two movements have different founders, scriptures, doctrines, practices, and organizations.

Important Areas of Agreement

Scientologists and biblical Christians may share several concerns.

But bearing God’s image does not make us gods.

It is reconciliation with the God who made us.

Are Human Beings Basically Good?

Human beings retain qualities reflecting God’s image.

People can show:

Scientology distinguishes between the analytical mind and the reactive mind.

The analytical mind is associated with conscious thought, evaluation, and problem-solving.

The reactive mind is understood to contain painful recordings that operate beneath conscious control.

What Is an Engram?

Scientology and Dianetics describe an engram as a detailed mental recording associated with a period of pain and reduced or absent consciousness.

Engrams are believed to affect people later without their conscious awareness.

Painful experiences can certainly leave lasting effects.

People may need:

• Safety

• Time

Whatever physical changes the instrument may register, an electrical device cannot independently reveal:

• Whether a person is forgiven by God

Spiritual truth cannot be reduced to the movement of a meter.

Can Technology Measure the Soul?

No physical instrument can fully measure an immaterial spirit.

But translating a physical reading into a definite spiritual judgment requires assumptions that the machine itself cannot verify.

What Does It Mean to Become Clear?

Clear is presented as a major state of advancement within Scientology.

A Clear is understood as no longer possessing a reactive mind in the former sense and as better able to act rationally rather than react irrationally.

• Freedom from unwanted reactions
• Increased effectiveness
• Greater spiritual awareness

But even complete freedom from a proposed reactive mind would not make someone righteous before God.

A calm, capable, rational person may still be proud, unbelieving, self-centered, or unforgiven.

What Is an Operating Thetan?

Operating Thetan is described as a spiritual state beyond Clear.

The goal involves recovering greater certainty and ability as a spiritual being, including greater freedom from dependence upon the physical body and universe.

Scientology does not officially teach that an Operating Thetan becomes God.

It teaches that the person more fully recovers his own native spiritual beingness and abilities.

The Bible offers a different goal.

Salvation is not becoming increasingly independent of creation or recovering hidden power over matter, energy, space, and time.

It is being reconciled to God and transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ.

Is Spiritual Power the Same as Spiritual Holiness?

No.

Power, ability, knowledge, and control do not prove moral goodness.

Satan is spiritually powerful but evil.

Have We Lived Before?

Jesus is the Creator of every human spirit.

No.

He did not gradually advance from ignorance toward superior spiritual ability.

Why Did Jesus Come?

Jesus did not come merely to teach people how to recover hidden abilities.

But growth follows salvation.

It does not purchase salvation.

Can Practical Results Prove Scientology Is True?

No.

A person may report improved confidence, communication, or emotional relief.

Those experiences should not be mocked.

• Does it accurately describe humanity?
• Does it agree with historical reality?

Why Trust the Bible Above L. Ron Hubbard’s Writings?

The Bible’s message developed publicly across centuries through prophets and apostles.

It is grounded in:

• Historical people
• Named nations
• Public events
• Fulfilled prophecy
• The ministry of Jesus
• His crucifixion
• Eyewitness testimony concerning His resurrection

Scripture says:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God…”

3. Stop Trusting in Self-Rehabilitation

Auditing, training, ethical programs, Clear, and Operating Thetan levels cannot erase guilt.

4. Repent

Turn from sin, self-rule, spiritual pride, false teaching, and every confidence that competes with Jesus Christ.

Those whom Jesus saves should grow in wisdom, responsibility, communication, love, purity, and service.

A Prayer From an Honest Heart

Repeating a prayer cannot save you. Jesus Christ saves. But you may express sincere repentance and faith in words such as these:

God who created heaven and earth, I want to know You as You truly are. I confess that I have sinned against You and cannot save or rehabilitate myself through auditing, Dianetics, an E-Meter, Clear, Operating Thetan levels, past-life exploration, ethical achievement, or recovered spiritual ability. I believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Creator and Lord who became man, lived without sin, bore my guilt, died in my place, and bodily rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and every spiritual confidence that competes with Him. I place my complete trust in Jesus Christ as my only Lord, Savior, righteousness, High Priest, and source of eternal life. The saving power is not in repeating these exact words.

The question is whether you have genuinely turned from sin and self-reliance to the living God through Jesus Christ.

What If Scientology Helped You?

You do not need to deny every positive experience in order to examine its spiritual claims honestly.

You may believe Scientology helped you:

• Communicate more confidently
• Face a painful memory
• Set goals
• Accept responsibility
• Feel spiritually significant
• Find supportive relationships

Those experiences may be meaningful.

But the most important question is not merely:

“Did it help me?”

It is:

“Does it tell the truth about God, humanity, sin, death, salvation, and Jesus Christ?”

What If Your Family or Friends Are Scientologists?

Continue loving them.

Do not mock their experiences, vocabulary, goals, or desire for spiritual improvement.

Speak accurately and patiently.

You may explain:

“I still value responsibility, communication, and honest examination. But I now believe my deepest problem is sin rather than a reactive mind, that I have lived one earthly life rather than many, and that only Jesus Christ can forgive me, give me new life, and raise me from the dead.”

“Be ready always to give an answer… with meekness and fear.”

Our Purpose

Our purpose is not to insult Scientologists, dismiss every positive experience, or pretend that everyone carrying a Christian label truly follows Jesus.

Many church members also trust in:

• Religious programs
• Personal achievement
• Emotional experiences
• Good works
• Church membership
• A respected human teacher
• A prayer once repeated

rather than Jesus Christ.

Every person must examine the foundation:

Human beings are spiritual as well as physical.

Painful experiences can affect us deeply.

Responsibility matters.

Communication matters.

Personal growth matters.

But human spirits did not create themselves.

We are not suppressed gods recovering unlimited native power.

Human beings are not morally good at their deepest level.

Our greatest problem is not merely the reactive mind.

It is sin against God.

Engrams cannot explain every act of rebellion.

An E-Meter cannot judge the soul.

Auditing cannot remove guilt.

Clear cannot make a sinner righteous.

Operating Thetan levels cannot defeat divine judgment.

Past-life experiences cannot overturn the Bible’s teaching that we live once and then face God.

Jesus Christ is not one respected religious teacher among many.

He is the eternal Word.

He created every human spirit.

He became truly human.

He lived without sin.

He bore our guilt.

He died once as the final sacrifice.

His actual body rose from the grave.

He offers forgiveness instead of self-rehabilitation.

He offers new birth instead of recovered past-life identity.

He offers resurrection instead of another physical lifetime.

He offers salvation as a gift instead of a spiritual level we must attain.

Do not rest your eternal hope in auditing, Clear, Operating Thetan levels, past-life experiences, or recovered spiritual ability. Come completely to Jesus Christ—the Creator of your spirit, bearer of your guilt, bodily risen Lord, and only giver of everlasting life.
