Where Is Heaven?

THE QUESTION

Where is Heaven? Is it a physical place somewhere in the universe, a spiritual realm beyond ordinary human sight, or simply a symbol for being near God?

SHORT ANSWER

The Bible presents Heaven as a real realm where God’s throne is and where Christ reigns. Scripture commonly speaks of it as “above” and distinguishes it from the earth, yet it does not give coordinates that people can locate through astronomy or space travel.

Believers who die depart to be with Christ in Heaven. The final Christian hope also includes a new heaven and a new earth, where God will dwell with His resurrected people forever.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS

Scripture uses the word “heaven” in more than one sense. It can refer to the sky where birds fly, the expanse containing the sun and stars, or the highest Heaven associated with God’s throne and presence. Context determines the meaning.

God is present everywhere and cannot be confined inside creation. Solomon prayed, “the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee” (1 Kings 8:27). Yet Scripture truly describes Heaven as God’s dwelling place and the location of His throne. Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Our Father which art in heaven” (Matthew 6:9).

The Bible repeatedly uses upward language. Jesus “was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight” (Acts 1:9). Stephen looked “up stedfastly into heaven” and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God’s right hand (Acts 7:55). Paul said that Christ “ascended up far above all heavens” (Ephesians 4:10).

This language is true, but Scripture does not identify Heaven with a planet, distant galaxy, or measurable point in space. “Above” expresses Heaven’s distinction, authority, and relation to earth, but the Bible does not authorize maps or scientific calculations of its location.

Revelation adds an important final truth. John saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” followed by the holy city descending from God out of Heaven (Revelation 21:1–2). God’s eternal purpose is not merely to remove His people from earth forever, but to dwell with them in a renewed creation.

KEY SCRIPTURES—KJV

Isaiah 66:1: “Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.”

Matthew 6:9: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”

Acts 1:9: “While they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”

2 Corinthians 12:2: “I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago… such an one caught up to the third heaven.”

Revelation 21:1–2: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth… And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven.”

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES

WHERE CHRISTIANS DIFFER

Christians differ over how Heaven relates to the physical universe. Some describe it as a spiritual dimension beyond ordinary sight; others emphasize a real created place beyond the observable cosmos. Scripture does not settle those scientific or philosophical models.

The Bible clearly establishes what matters: Heaven is real, God reigns there, Christ ascended there, believers depart to be with Him, and God will finally dwell with His people in a renewed creation.

THE CONCLUSION

Heaven is the real realm of God’s throne and Christ’s present reign. Scripture describes it as above and distinct from earth, but it gives no coordinates that humans can discover. Christians should rest in the certainty of God’s presence rather than speculate about distance or astronomy. Ultimately, God will bring His people into resurrection life in the new heaven and new earth.
