Can God do absolutely anything?

God is almighty and can accomplish everything consistent with His will and perfect nature. Nothing outside Him can overpower or defeat Him. However, the Bible also says that God cannot lie, cannot deny Himself, cannot be tempted with evil, and cannot act contrary to His holy character. These are not weaknesses; they express His unchanging perfection.

“Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power … and there is nothing too hard for thee.” — Jeremiah 32:17 (KJV)

God possesses unlimited power

The Bible repeatedly identifies God as almighty. He created the universe by His word, rules over nations, gives life, raises the dead, and accomplishes purposes no creature could perform.

When God promised something humanly impossible, He asked Jeremiah, “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27). The expected answer is no. No created power can make God helpless.

Nothing can defeat God’s purpose

Job confessed, “I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee” (Job 42:2). Isaiah 46:10 records God’s declaration, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”

God may permit opposition for a time, but He is never trapped by it. Human rulers, Satan, demons, natural forces, and death itself cannot finally overthrow what God has determined to accomplish.

God cannot lie

Titus 1:2 speaks of “God, that cannot lie.” Hebrews 6:18 likewise says, “it was impossible for God to lie.” This does not reveal a lack of power. Lying is not an ability that would make a perfectly truthful God greater.

Because God cannot lie, His promises are dependable. His word does not become false when circumstances appear difficult.

God cannot deny His own nature

Second Timothy 2:13 says, “he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” God cannot cease to be God, become unjust, turn evil, or contradict His own perfect character.

God’s power and holiness never compete. He does not need to choose between being mighty and being good. Every exercise of His power is consistent with who He eternally is.

God cannot be tempted with evil

James 1:13 says, “God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.” Evil has no attraction for Him. He never sins and never entices anyone to sin.

When Scripture says God tests someone, the purpose is to reveal, refine, or prove faith—not to seduce that person into wrongdoing.

Contradictions do not measure divine power

Questions are sometimes asked such as, “Can God create a stone so heavy that He cannot lift it?” The wording demands that an unlimited God become limited at the same time. It combines mutually contradictory claims rather than describing a genuine task.

The Bible measures God’s power by what is real and consistent with His nature, not by meaningless combinations of words. God can do all His holy will, and no real power can prevent Him.

“With God all things are possible” must be read in context

Jesus said, “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). He was speaking about salvation. Human beings cannot save themselves, but God can do what human effort cannot accomplish.

This verse is not a promise that every personal wish will occur. God does not promise to fulfill desires that contradict His will, wisdom, or holiness.

God’s power does not mean He always does what we request

God is able to heal, deliver, provide, and intervene. Yet an unanswered request does not prove that He lacks power. He may answer differently because His wisdom and purpose exceed our understanding.

Biblical faith trusts both God’s ability and His character. It asks boldly while submitting honestly: “nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42).

God alone can save

Human works cannot erase guilt, conquer death, or produce spiritual life. God demonstrated His power by raising Jesus Christ from the dead. Romans 1:16 calls the gospel “the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.”

Salvation is received through faith in Jesus Christ, not earned by ritual, moral effort, or repeating certain words. The almighty God is fully able to save those who come to Christ.

The biblical answer

God can accomplish everything consistent with His holy will and perfect nature. Nothing is too difficult for Him, and no creature can defeat His purpose.

God cannot lie, sin, deny Himself, or become evil. Those statements do not limit His omnipotence; they declare that His power is eternally joined to flawless truth, holiness, wisdom, and faithfulness.
