Has God always existed?

Yes. God has always existed. He had no beginning, will have no end, and did not come into being through any cause or process. Everything created depends upon Him, but God depends upon nothing outside Himself.

God existed before creation

Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The beginning described there is the beginning of the created order, not the beginning of God. Before the universe existed, God was already there.

Jesus prayed to the Father concerning the glory He had “before the world was” (John 17:5). Scripture therefore does not picture God waiting inside empty time. Time itself belongs to the order He created.

God is the source of life

Created things receive existence. God possesses life in Himself. Acts 17:25 says He gives “to all life, and breath, and all things.” He is not served “as though he needed any thing.”

When God told Moses, “I AM THAT I AM” (Exodus 3:14), He revealed His independent, continuing existence. Theologians call this self-existence. The term summarizes the biblical truth that God’s life is not borrowed.

God is not merely very old

Calling God eternal means more than saying He has existed for an extremely long time. A very old creature would still need an explanation. God is categorically different from creation: He is the uncreated One upon whom all else depends.

Isaiah 57:15 calls Him “the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity.” Revelation 1:8 declares Him to be the One “which is, and which was, and which is to come.”

Why an eternal God is necessary

If everything required a prior creator, explanation would be postponed forever and nothing would finally account for existence. The Bible does not say everything has a cause. It teaches that created and dependent things have causes, while the eternal God is the necessary source of all else.

This does not invent an exception to rescue faith. God and the universe are not the same kind of thing. The universe changes, consists of dependent parts, and had a beginning. God is eternal, independent, and uncreated.

God’s eternality gives confidence

Because God did not begin, He cannot cease to be. His promises do not rest upon a temporary power. Moses wrote, “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27).

Human generations pass, but God remains faithful. His plan of redemption is not threatened by time, death, or change.

The eternal God entered history

The Son existed before His birth in Bethlehem. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word,” and verse 3 says all things were made by Him. The eternal Word became flesh (John 1:14). Jesus Christ can give everlasting life because He is not merely another created teacher.

The biblical answer

God has always existed. He is from everlasting to everlasting, the source of all life, and the Creator of time and the universe. We need not explain God by something greater, because if something greater produced Him, that greater reality—not God—would be ultimate.

The eternal God calls temporary people to know Him through Jesus Christ. “This is life eternal,” Jesus said, “that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3).
