For Eckankar Readers: Can Soul Travel Lead Us Home to God?

Truth has nothing to fear from honest examination.

A respectful note before we begin: This study examines spiritual teachings, not the dignity, sincerity, intelligence, spiritual experiences, dreams, compassion, or moral character of Eckankar practitioners. Our purpose is not to ridicule singing HU, contemplation, spiritual dreams, belief in divine love, or the desire for a direct relationship with God. Individual Eckankar students may understand particular teachings differently. We respectfully invite every reader—including Christians—to test every spiritual experience, teacher, sacred writing, and claim about God by the Holy Bible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this page.

You may identify yourself as:

  • An Eckankar student
  • An ECKist
  • A spiritual seeker
  • A student of the Light and Sound of God
  • A follower of the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master
  • Someone who practices Soul Travel
  • Someone who sings or chants HU

You may have been drawn toward Eckankar because you desired:

  • A direct personal experience of God
  • Freedom from rigid religious institutions
  • Understanding of spiritual dreams
  • Knowledge of previous lives
  • Freedom from karma
  • Greater divine love
  • Spiritual protection and guidance
  • Awareness beyond the physical body
  • Self-Realization
  • God-Realization

You may have been taught:

You do not merely possess a soul. You are Soul.

You may understand Soul as:

  • Eternal
  • Individual
  • Creative
  • Divine
  • Temporarily using a physical body
  • Capable of conscious experience beyond the body
  • Progressing through many lifetimes

You may believe that Soul has forgotten its divine nature and must awaken to its true identity.

You may believe that the spiritual journey includes:

  • Karma
  • Reincarnation
  • Spiritual exercises
  • Dream study
  • Soul Travel
  • Contact with the Light and Sound of God
  • Guidance from ECK Masters
  • Initiations into higher levels of awareness

You may sing:

HU

as a sacred love song to God.

You may believe that singing HU can help you:

  • Become more aware of divine love
  • Receive spiritual guidance
  • Experience peace
  • Open yourself to the Light and Sound
  • Remember dreams
  • Develop greater spiritual awareness
  • Strengthen your relationship with the Mahanta

You may believe that spiritual dreams are more than ordinary products of the sleeping mind.

They may be understood as opportunities to:

  • Receive instruction
  • Meet spiritual teachers
  • Resolve problems
  • Remember former lives
  • Explore inner worlds
  • Experience Soul apart from the body

You may understand Soul Travel as shifting awareness beyond the physical body while remaining conscious.

You may believe that Soul can travel through spiritual planes and gain direct knowledge that does not depend upon another person’s religious testimony.

You may also believe that:

  • Human beings have lived before.
  • Present circumstances may result from earlier lives.
  • Wrong actions create karma.
  • Karma must be balanced or resolved.
  • Reincarnation provides repeated opportunities for spiritual growth.
  • Soul can ultimately escape the cycle of karma and rebirth.

You may honor Paul Twitchell as the modern founder who restored the ancient teachings of ECK to public awareness.

You may honor the current Mahanta, the Living ECK Master, as:

  • The outward leader of Eckankar
  • An inward spiritual teacher
  • A guide in dreams and Soul Travel
  • Part of an ancient lineage of ECK Masters
  • One who assists Souls toward spiritual freedom

You may believe that the Mahanta does not save people by force but helps awaken the God-knowledge already within Soul.

You may regard Jesus as:

  • A great spiritual teacher
  • An advanced Soul
  • A spiritual master
  • A messenger of divine love
  • One teacher among several who have helped humanity

But you may not believe that Jesus is:

  • The eternal Creator of every Soul
  • The only incarnation of God
  • The one Mediator between God and humanity
  • The only Savior
  • The final authority over every spiritual master

These teachings raise several essential questions:

Are human beings eternal divine Souls—or creatures made by the eternal God?

Did we exist before our present earthly lives?

Have we repeatedly reincarnated?

Can present suffering be explained by forgotten karma from previous lives?

Can spiritual exercises eliminate moral guilt?

Does singing HU bring a person to God?

Can Soul actually leave the body and travel through spiritual planes?

How can a spiritual traveler know that an inner guide is trustworthy?

Can dreams and out-of-body experiences be deceptive?

Did God appoint an unbroken lineage of ECK Masters?

Does the Bible identify the Mahanta or Living ECK Master?

Is God-knowledge already within every person—or must God reveal Himself?

Is Jesus one spiritual master—or the Creator of every spiritual being?

Can karma be worked off through many lives—or did Jesus completely bear the judgment for sin?

Does death lead to another incarnation—or to judgment and bodily resurrection?

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:21, KJV

What Is Eckankar?

Eckankar presents itself as a path of spiritual freedom and direct personal experience with Divine Spirit.

Its modern public organization began through Paul Twitchell during the 1960s.

Its teachings commonly emphasize:

  • Soul as humanity’s true identity
  • The Light and Sound of God
  • Soul Travel
  • Spiritual dreams
  • Karma
  • Reincarnation
  • HU as a sacred sound
  • Self-Realization
  • God-Realization
  • The Mahanta, the Living ECK Master
  • A lineage of ECK Masters

Eckankar students may participate in:

  • Personal spiritual exercises
  • HU songs
  • Spiritual discussions
  • Satsang classes
  • Seminars
  • Study of ECK writings
  • Initiations
  • Dream and experience journals

Eckankar places considerable emphasis upon personal experience.

A person is encouraged not merely to believe spiritual ideas but to test them through dreams, contemplation, and inner exploration.

This desire for firsthand knowledge should be treated seriously.

The Bible also invites people to know God personally.

But personal experience must still be interpreted and tested.

Important Areas of Agreement

Eckankar readers and biblical Christians may share several meaningful concerns.

Both may affirm that:

  • Material existence is not all that exists.
  • Human life possesses spiritual meaning.
  • Love is central to genuine spirituality.
  • The spiritual world is real.
  • Dreams can sometimes carry significance.
  • Human choices have consequences.
  • Selfishness, anger, greed, and hatred are destructive.
  • People should seek a real relationship with God.
  • Empty religious ritual is insufficient.
  • Spiritual truth should affect daily living.

The Bible teaches that God is love:

“God is love.”
— 1 John 4:8, KJV

It teaches that the spiritual realm is real:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers… against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
— Ephesians 6:12, KJV

It teaches that choices have consequences:

“Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
— Galatians 6:7, KJV

It teaches that God may use dreams:

“God… speaketh… in a dream, in a vision of the night…”
— Job 33:14–15, KJV

These similarities are meaningful.

But similar words do not necessarily carry the same meanings.

The central disagreements concern God, Soul, reincarnation, spiritual authority, Jesus Christ, salvation, and life after death.

Are You an Eternal Divine Soul?

No human being is eternal in the same sense as God.

God alone exists without beginning.

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”
— Psalm 90:2, KJV

God created humanity.

“So God created man in his own image…”
— Genesis 1:27, KJV

Being created in God’s image gives human beings extraordinary dignity.

But an image of God is not a portion of God.

Human beings are:

  • Created
  • Finite
  • Dependent
  • Personally accountable to God

God alone is:

  • Uncreated
  • Self-existent
  • Infinite
  • The source of all life

Does the Soul Exist Because God Loves It?

Human life does exist because of God’s loving will.

But we do not exist as eternal divine beings alongside Him.

Paul says:

“He giveth to all life, and breath, and all things.”
— Acts 17:25, KJV

We possess continuing personal existence because God created and sustains us.

We do not possess life independently.

Is Divinity Already Hidden Within Every Person?

No.

Every person bears God’s image, but Scripture does not teach that every person contains an inner divine essence waiting to awaken.

Humanity’s condition apart from God is described as:

“Dead in trespasses and sins.”
— Ephesians 2:1, KJV

Jesus did not tell people merely to recognize their preexisting divinity.

He said:

“Ye must be born again.”
— John 3:7, KJV

New birth is not awakening to a divine identity already possessed.

It is God giving spiritual life to a sinner.

What Is the Difference Between Soul and Body?

The Bible distinguishes the inward person from the physical body.

Physical death separates the soul or spirit from the body temporarily.

But the body is not merely an unimportant vehicle discarded forever.

God formed the first man physically:

“The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
— Genesis 2:7, KJV

The verse does not describe an eternally existing Soul entering a temporary body.

The embodied man became a living person.

Is the Body Merely a Temporary Vehicle?

The present body is temporary in its mortal condition.

But embodiment is part of God’s design.

The final Christian hope is not permanent escape from the body.

It is bodily resurrection.

Paul writes:

“It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:42, KJV

God will transform the body rather than abandon embodied human life.

Have We Lived Previous Earthly Lives?

No.

The Bible teaches one earthly life:

“It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”
— Hebrews 9:27, KJV

The sequence is:

  1. One earthly life
  2. Death
  3. Judgment

It is not:

  1. Life
  2. Death
  3. Another birth
  4. Another death
  5. Many further incarnations

Does Karma Explain Human Suffering?

Karma may appear to explain why people experience different circumstances.

It may suggest that present suffering resulted from actions in forgotten lives.

But Scripture does not teach that a child’s suffering proves guilt accumulated before birth.

When Jesus’ disciples saw a man born blind, they asked whether he had sinned before his birth.

Jesus answered:

“Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents…”
— John 9:3, KJV

The man was not repaying a debt from another life.

Why Do People Suffer?

Suffering may result from:

  • Living in a fallen world
  • Illness
  • Natural disaster
  • Human cruelty
  • Our own choices
  • Another person’s choices
  • Persecution
  • Divine discipline
  • Purposes we do not presently understand

We should not assume that a suffering person deserves his circumstances because of supposed previous lives.

Jesus responded to suffering with compassion.

Is Karma the Same as Biblical Sowing and Reaping?

No.

Both concepts recognize that actions have consequences.

But biblical accountability occurs under the personal authority of God.

Sin is not merely an impersonal energy or debt carried through reincarnations.

Sin is rebellion against the holy Creator.

David prayed:

“Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight…”
— Psalm 51:4, KJV

Because sin is personal guilt against God, forgiveness must come from God.

Can Karma Be Worked Off?

No amount of future experience can make past guilt disappear.

Suppose a person steals and later becomes generous.

His generosity may be good, but it does not make the theft cease to have occurred.

Another lifetime would offer more opportunities to choose, but it would not erase earlier rebellion.

Sin requires atonement and forgiveness.

What Is Soul Travel?

Soul Travel is generally understood in Eckankar as conscious awareness of oneself as Soul beyond the limitations of the physical body.

Experiences may include:

  • Awareness of leaving the body
  • Visiting inner planes
  • Meeting spiritual teachers
  • Receiving instruction
  • Experiencing light or sound
  • Observing the physical body from another perspective

People in many religions and cultures have reported out-of-body experiences.

Such experiences may feel intensely real.

But the reality of an experience does not automatically prove the interpretation attached to it.

Can Human Consciousness Experience Unusual States?

Yes.

People may experience unusual perceptions during:

  • Sleep
  • Dreaming
  • Trauma
  • Illness
  • Deep contemplation
  • Extreme exhaustion
  • Near-death conditions
  • Altered psychological states

Some experiences may remain difficult to explain.

But an unexplained experience does not prove that an eternal divine Soul traveled objectively through higher planes.

Can Spiritual Experiences Be Deceptive?

Yes.

The Bible teaches that deceptive spiritual beings exist.

John commands:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”
— 1 John 4:1, KJV

Paul warns:

“Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”
— 2 Corinthians 11:14, KJV

An experience involving:

  • Light
  • Sound
  • Love
  • Peace
  • A spiritual guide
  • Accurate hidden information

does not automatically come from God.

How Should an Inner Guide Be Tested?

Ask:

  • Does the guide direct worship only to the Creator?
  • Does the guide agree with the Holy Bible?
  • Does the guide confess the true identity of Jesus Christ?
  • Does the guide teach one earthly life or many?
  • Does the guide offer salvation through Christ or spiritual advancement?
  • Does the guide compete with Jesus as mediator?

The Holy Ghost will never contradict the Word He inspired.

Can Dreams Come From God?

Yes.

God used dreams in Scripture.

But the Bible also warns about false dreams.

Jeremiah records God saying:

“I am against them that prophesy false dreams…”
— Jeremiah 23:32, KJV

Dreams may come from:

  • Ordinary mental processing
  • Personal fears
  • Desires
  • Memory
  • God
  • Spiritual deception

A dream must not become an authority above Scripture.

What Is HU?

HU is used in Eckankar as a sacred sound or love song directed toward God.

Singing it may produce:

  • Calmness
  • Focused attention
  • Emotional comfort
  • A sense of spiritual openness
  • A feeling of connection

Repeated vocal sounds can affect breathing, attention, and emotion.

But a peaceful internal state does not prove that the practice opens a divinely authorized path to God.

Does the Bible Teach Us to Chant HU?

No.

The word HU is not given in Scripture as God’s sacred universal name or as a spiritual exercise necessary for approaching Him.

Jesus taught His disciples to pray personally:

“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”
— Matthew 6:9, KJV

Biblical prayer includes:

  • Praise
  • Thanksgiving
  • Confession
  • Requests
  • Intercession
  • Submission to God’s will

God desires truthful relationship, not dependence upon a particular sacred syllable.

Can Repetition Produce Spiritual Merit?

No.

Jesus warned:

“When ye pray, use not vain repetitions…”
— Matthew 6:7, KJV

This does not prohibit repeating sincere words or praying persistently.

It warns against treating repetition as a mechanism that produces spiritual power or guarantees divine access.

Who Is the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master?

Eckankar teaches that the Living ECK Master functions as both:

  • An outward spiritual leader
  • An inward spiritual guide

He may be understood as assisting students through:

  • Teachings
  • Dreams
  • Spiritual exercises
  • Inner experiences
  • Soul Travel
  • Initiations

The title carries extraordinary spiritual authority.

The biblical question is:

Did God appoint such an office?

Does the Bible Identify a Living ECK Master?

No.

Scripture does not teach:

  • An ancient succession of Mahantas
  • A Living ECK Master required for spiritual liberation
  • Initiations through ECK consciousness
  • An inner master appearing in dreams
  • ECK Masters assigned to spiritual planes

These teachings require an authority outside the Bible.

They should therefore be tested rather than assumed.

Can a Human Spiritual Master Guide Souls to God?

Teachers may help people understand truth.

But no human master can provide reconciliation with God.

Scripture declares:

“There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5, KJV

One Mediator means that no other inner or outer master is required.

Can a Human Master Remove Karma?

No human teacher can remove another person’s guilt.

Psalm 49 says:

“None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.”
— Psalm 49:7, KJV

A teacher may encourage or instruct.

Only Jesus supplied the ransom.

Should We Chant the Spiritual Name of a Master?

No human teacher’s name should become an object of sacred invocation.

The name exalted above every name is Jesus:

“God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.”
— Philippians 2:9, KJV

Peter declared:

“There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
— Acts 4:12, KJV

Who Was Paul Twitchell?

Paul Twitchell introduced the modern public teachings and organization of Eckankar.

Eckankar regards him as the modern founder who restored ancient spiritual truths.

The important question is not whether he was imaginative, persuasive, sincere, or spiritually interested.

The question is whether his claims agree with God’s Word.

Any teacher claiming:

  • Ancient hidden revelation
  • Contact with spiritual masters
  • Knowledge of higher worlds
  • A restored spiritual path

must be tested carefully.

Can a Later Teacher Restore Truth Lost From Christianity?

Jesus promised that His gospel would be proclaimed throughout the world.

The apostles recorded the saving message clearly.

Paul summarized it:

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

— 1 Corinthians 15:3–4, KJV

The Bible does not predict that the true path would disappear until Paul Twitchell restored it in the twentieth century.

Does Antiquity Prove a Teaching Is True?

No.

A belief may be ancient and false.

Idolatry, occultism, and false worship are ancient.

The question is not:

“How old is this teaching?”

It is:

“Did the true God reveal it?”

Who Is God?

The Bible presents God as the personal Creator.

He is not merely an impersonal source, current, sound, or spiritual ocean.

God:

  • Speaks
  • Loves
  • Commands
  • Judges
  • Forgives
  • Enters relationships
  • Answers prayer

He says:

“I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”
— Isaiah 44:6, KJV

Is Divine Spirit an Impersonal Sound Current?

The Holy Ghost works powerfully and may be associated with audible signs in Scripture.

But He is not an impersonal cosmic current.

The Holy Ghost:

  • Speaks
  • Teaches
  • Guides
  • Wills
  • Can be grieved
  • Bears witness concerning Jesus

He said:

“Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.”
— Acts 13:2, KJV

An impersonal current does not speak as “me” or call individuals to service.

Who Is Jesus Christ?

Jesus is not merely:

  • An advanced Soul
  • An ECK Master
  • One enlightened teacher among many
  • A guide appropriate for one religious era
  • A person who attained God-Realization

He is the eternal Word:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1, KJV

He created everything:

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
— John 1:3, KJV

He became human:

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…”
— John 1:14, KJV

Jesus did not discover His divine nature through spiritual exercises.

He is the uncreated Creator who entered His creation.

Did Jesus Progress Through Many Lifetimes?

No.

Jesus existed eternally before His human birth.

He said:

“Before Abraham was, I am.”
— John 8:58, KJV

He prayed concerning:

“The glory which I had with thee before the world was.”
— John 17:5, KJV

His birth was incarnation—not reincarnation.

Did Jesus Need Self-Realization?

No.

Jesus never forgot His true identity and then awakened through a master.

He knew that He came from the Father.

He lived completely without sin:

“Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.”
— 1 Peter 2:22, KJV

He was not one struggling Soul progressing toward God.

He came from God to save struggling sinners.

Why Did Jesus Come?

Jesus came because humanity could not return to God through spiritual advancement.

He said:

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
— Luke 19:10, KJV

He also said:

“The Son of man came… to give his life a ransom for many.”
— Mark 10:45, KJV

A spiritual master teaches a path.

A Savior rescues people who cannot save themselves.

What Is Humanity’s Deepest Problem?

Our deepest problem is not merely forgetfulness of divine identity.

It is sin against God.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
— Romans 3:23, KJV

Sin includes:

  • Idolatry
  • Pride
  • Dishonesty
  • Greed
  • Hatred
  • Lust
  • Unforgiveness
  • Self-righteousness
  • Failure to love God
  • Failure to love others

Spiritual experience cannot erase moral guilt.

Why Did Jesus Die?

Jesus died for our sins:

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:3, KJV

Peter writes:

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree…”
— 1 Peter 2:24, KJV

Isaiah prophesied:

“The LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
— Isaiah 53:6, KJV

Jesus did not merely demonstrate divine love.

He bore the judgment sinners deserved.

Did Jesus Pay the Complete Debt?

Yes.

From the cross, Jesus declared:

“It is finished.”
— John 19:30, KJV

Hebrews says:

“For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”
— Hebrews 10:14, KJV

No previous-life karma remains for the believer to repay.

No additional incarnation must complete Jesus’ work.

No initiation, chant, or master can add to His sacrifice.

Did Jesus Bodily Rise From the Dead?

Yes.

Jesus predicted:

“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
— John 2:19, KJV

John explains:

“But he spake of the temple of his body.”
— John 2:21, KJV

After rising, Jesus said:

“Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see…”
— Luke 24:39, KJV

His Soul did not merely move to a higher plane.

His actual body rose transformed from the grave.

What Is the Difference Between Soul Travel and Resurrection?

Soul Travel is claimed awareness beyond the physical body.

Resurrection is God restoring the whole person to embodied life.

Christian hope is not mastery of separation from the body.

It is victory over death.

Paul writes:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:54, KJV

What Happens After Death?

We do not enter another earthly body.

We face God:

“It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”
— Hebrews 9:27, KJV

Those who belong to Christ are with Him and await resurrection.

Those who reject Him remain under judgment.

This life is therefore spiritually urgent.

We should not assume that many future lives remain available.

Will Everyone Be Raised?

Yes.

Jesus said:

“The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
And shall come forth…”

— John 5:28–29, KJV

Jesus—not a Living ECK Master—possesses the authority to raise humanity.

Who Will Judge Humanity?

Jesus Christ.

Jesus said:

“The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.”
— John 5:22, KJV

God has confirmed this authority through Jesus’ resurrection.

Can Spiritual Exercises Save Us?

No.

Contemplation, dream journaling, and quiet reflection may help someone examine thoughts and emotions.

But they cannot:

  • Erase sin
  • Satisfy divine justice
  • Create new spiritual life
  • Replace Christ’s sacrifice

Paul writes:

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us…”
— Titus 3:5, KJV

Can Divine Love Save Without Justice?

God is love.

But God is also holy and just.

True love does not call evil harmless.

At the cross:

  • Sin was judged.
  • Justice was satisfied.
  • God’s love was revealed.
  • Forgiveness became available.

God is:

“Just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”
— Romans 3:26, KJV

How Is a Person Saved?

By grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

— Ephesians 2:8–9, KJV

Salvation is not achieved through:

  • Soul Travel
  • Singing HU
  • Dream study
  • Past-life knowledge
  • Karmic repayment
  • Reincarnation
  • Initiations
  • The Living ECK Master
  • Self-Realization
  • God-Realization

It is received through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

Does Grace Leave Us Unchanged?

No.

The next verse says:

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works…”
— Ephesians 2:10, KJV

Those whom Jesus saves should grow in:

  • Love
  • Truthfulness
  • Compassion
  • Humility
  • Purity
  • Patience
  • Service
  • Obedience

Spiritual transformation is the fruit of salvation.

It is not its purchase price.

Can You Know That You Have Eternal Life?

Yes.

Assurance does not depend upon wondering:

  • How much karma remains
  • How many lives you have lived
  • Whether you reached the correct inner plane
  • Whether an initiation was sufficient
  • Whether the Mahanta is guiding you

John writes:

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life…”
— 1 John 5:13, KJV

Confidence rests upon Jesus’ completed work and promise.

What If Eckankar Helped You?

You do not need to deny every positive experience in order to examine its spiritual claims.

Eckankar may have helped you:

  • Think seriously about eternity
  • Become calmer
  • Develop greater compassion
  • Pay attention to dreams
  • Move beyond materialism
  • Seek a personal relationship with God
  • Reflect upon the consequences of your choices
  • Become more loving

Those benefits may feel meaningful.

But the decisive question is not merely:

“Did this path help me?”

It is:

“Does it tell the truth about God, humanity, previous lives, spiritual masters, sin, Jesus Christ, death, judgment, and salvation?”

What If Christians Seem Spiritually Inexperienced?

Some professing Christians possess:

  • Religious vocabulary
  • Church membership
  • Biblical information

while showing little prayer, love, spiritual discernment, or transformed character.

That failure should be confronted.

But spiritually impressive experiences do not determine theological truth.

Every experience must still be tested by Scripture.

What Must You Do?

1. Recognize the Difference Between Creator and Creature

You are created in God’s image, but you are not an eternal portion of God.

“It is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves.”
— Psalm 100:3, KJV

2. Reject Reincarnation

You possess one earthly life, followed by judgment.

“It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”
— Hebrews 9:27, KJV

3. Recognize Your Personal Sin

Your deepest problem is not forgotten divinity or unresolved cosmic energy.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
— Romans 3:23, KJV

4. Stop Trusting in Spiritual Experiences

Dreams, light, sound, peace, and out-of-body sensations cannot prove salvation.

Test every spirit and experience by God’s Word.

5. Stop Trusting in HU and Spiritual Exercises

No sacred syllable, contemplation, or inward technique can cleanse guilt.

“The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
— 1 John 1:7, KJV

6. Stop Trusting in a Living Spiritual Master

Jesus alone is the Mediator between God and humanity.

“There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5, KJV

7. Recognize Jesus as the Eternal Creator

Do not regard Him merely as one advanced teacher.

“All things were made by him…”
— John 1:3, KJV

8. Believe That Jesus Bore Your Guilt

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree…”
— 1 Peter 2:24, KJV

9. Repent

Turn from sin, self-righteousness, reincarnation, occult spiritual exploration, dependence upon spiritual masters, and every authority that competes with Jesus.

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out…”
— Acts 3:19, KJV

10. Believe the Gospel

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

— 1 Corinthians 15:3–4, KJV

11. Receive Jesus Christ

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God…”
— John 1:12, KJV

12. Trust Him Completely

Do not trust partly in Jesus and partly in:

  • HU
  • Soul Travel
  • Spiritual dreams
  • Past lives
  • ECK initiations
  • Paul Twitchell
  • The Mahanta
  • The Living ECK Master
  • ECK Masters
  • Your spiritual advancement

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…”
— Acts 16:31, KJV

13. Seek Genuine Spiritual Life Through the Holy Ghost

Following Jesus does not mean accepting spiritually lifeless religion.

Ask God to:

  • Give you new birth
  • Fill you with the Holy Ghost
  • Guide you through Scripture
  • Teach you to pray
  • Produce divine love within you
  • Give wisdom and discernment
  • Transform your character

A Prayer From an Honest Heart

Repeating a prayer cannot save you. Jesus Christ saves. But you may express sincere repentance and faith in words such as these:

One true and living God, Creator of heaven, earth, every angel, and every human being, I want to know You exactly as You have revealed Yourself. I confess that I am not an eternal divine Soul and that I have personally sinned against You. I cannot save myself through HU, Soul Travel, dreams, past-life knowledge, reincarnation, karmic repayment, initiations, spiritual exercises, or the guidance of a human master. I believe that Jesus Christ is not merely one spiritual teacher but the eternal Word and Creator who became truly human. I believe He lived without sin, bore my guilt, died in my place, and bodily rose from the grave. I believe His sacrifice completely paid for sin and that He alone is the Mediator between You and humanity. I turn from sin, reincarnation, occult spiritual exploration, self-realization as salvation, and every spiritual authority that competes with Jesus. I place my complete trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord, my God, my righteousness, my High Priest, and my only Savior. Forgive me, give me new birth, fill me with Your Holy Spirit, guide me through Your written Word, and teach me to live in truth, love, humility, holiness, and obedience. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The saving power is not in repeating these exact words.

The question is whether you have genuinely turned from sin and competing spiritual paths to the living God through Jesus Christ.

What If Your Family or Friends Follow Eckankar?

Continue loving and respecting them.

Do not mock:

  • Their spiritual experiences
  • Their singing of HU
  • Their dreams
  • Their desire for divine love
  • Their search for spiritual truth
  • Their respect for spiritual teachers

Do not act as though Christianity offers only cold intellectual religion.

Your own life should increasingly demonstrate:

  • Love
  • Truthfulness
  • Prayer
  • Spiritual discernment
  • Humility
  • Compassion
  • Holiness
  • Dependence upon the Holy Ghost
  • Complete confidence in Jesus

You may explain gently:

“I remain grateful for the emphasis upon divine love, spiritual reality, personal experience, and responsibility for our choices. But I now believe the Bible teaches that I am a created person rather than an eternal divine Soul, that I live once rather than through repeated incarnations, and that Jesus Christ is the eternal Creator and only Mediator who completely bore my sins and bodily rose from the dead.”

“Be ready always to give an answer… with meekness and fear.”
— 1 Peter 3:15, KJV

What Should You Read Next?

Begin with the Gospel of John.

As you read, ask:

Is Jesus one spiritual master—or the Creator of everything?

Did Jesus attain divinity—or eternally possess it?

Did Jesus teach reincarnation?

Did He teach Soul Travel as the way to God?

Why did Jesus die?

Did His actual body rise?

Who did Jesus identify as the only way to the Father?

Continue with:

  • Genesis 1–3
  • Psalm 49, 51, 90, and 100
  • Isaiah 40–46 and 53
  • Jeremiah 23
  • Matthew 6, 10, 24, and 28
  • Mark 10
  • Luke 19 and 22–24
  • The Gospel of John
  • Acts 4, 13, and 17
  • Romans 1–8
  • 1 Corinthians 1–2 and 15
  • 2 Corinthians 5 and 11
  • Galatians 1–6
  • Ephesians 1–6
  • Philippians 2–3
  • Colossians 1–3
  • 1 Timothy 2
  • Titus 2–3
  • Hebrews 1–2 and 7–10
  • James 1–2
  • 1 Peter 1–3
  • 1 John
  • Jude
  • Revelation 20–22

As you study, ask:

Does Scripture describe human beings as eternal and divine?

Did we exist before conception?

Does death lead to reincarnation or judgment?

Can karma explain the man born blind?

Can inner light and sound experiences be deceptive?

Does Scripture authorize a Mahanta or Living ECK Master?

Who is the one Mediator?

Who created every visible and invisible power?

Who bore our guilt?

Who bodily defeated death?

Our Purpose

Our purpose is not to insult Eckankar students, ridicule spiritual dreams, mock singing HU, deny that unusual experiences occur, or defend Christians whose religion contains no evidence of spiritual life.

Many professing Christians trust in:

  • Church membership
  • A denomination
  • A pastor
  • A baptism
  • A prayer once repeated
  • Biblical knowledge without obedience

rather than Jesus Christ.

Many spiritual seekers trust in:

  • Inner experiences
  • Dreams
  • Light and sound
  • Out-of-body experiences
  • Past-life memories
  • A spiritual master
  • Personal advancement

rather than Jesus Christ.

Every person must examine the foundation:

“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.”
— 2 Corinthians 13:5, KJV

The spiritual world is real.

Love matters.

Human choices have consequences.

Dreams may sometimes possess significance.

Empty religious ritual cannot save.

People should desire a genuine relationship with God.

But human beings are not eternal divine Souls.

God alone is eternal and uncreated.

We are creatures made in His image.

We did not live previous earthly lives.

We live once and then face judgment.

Suffering does not prove forgotten karmic guilt.

Sin is not an impersonal debt carried through reincarnation.

Sin is personal guilt before the holy Creator.

Another lifetime cannot erase that guilt.

Soul Travel cannot reconcile us to God.

Dreams and spiritual experiences may be misinterpreted.

Spiritual beings can deceive.

An appearance of light does not prove divine truth.

HU is not revealed in the Bible as God’s saving name or required spiritual sound.

No sacred syllable can cleanse the conscience.

The Bible does not authorize a Mahanta or Living ECK Master.

No human master can remove guilt or guide the soul into salvation.

There is one Mediator between God and humanity.

Jesus Christ is not one spiritual master among many.

He is the eternal Word.

He was with God.

He was God.

He created all things visible and invisible.

He did not reincarnate.

He came down from Heaven.

He became truly human.

He lived without sin.

He bore our guilt.

He gave His life as a ransom.

He declared, “It is finished.”

His actual body rose from the grave.

He defeated death.

He gives new birth.

He will bodily raise the dead.

He will judge humanity.

He alone gives everlasting life.

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
— John 1:3, KJV

“There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5, KJV

“It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”
— Hebrews 9:27, KJV

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree…”
— 1 Peter 2:24, KJV

“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”
— John 11:25, KJV

“Neither is there salvation in any other…”
— Acts 4:12, KJV

Do not rest your eternal hope in HU, Soul Travel, spiritual dreams, past lives, karma, reincarnation, initiations, ECK Masters, Paul Twitchell, or the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master. Come completely to Jesus Christ—the eternal Creator, one Mediator, bearer of your sins, bodily risen Lord, final Judge, and only giver of everlasting life.
